To find work in an avenue that is your passion is desired. This is not a blog about that 'How to'.
This topic is perhaps the most common verbal and email exchanges I have with people. Maybe you have heard it in conversation with folks around you, or maybe you've felt it. There are countless blogs and books about how to find a job that you love. Sometimes this comes easy, others find it by being at the right place at the right time, while some others find it by doing the work, asking tough questions and taking the risk. For whatever its worth, my journey falls in the third category, and I know how frustrating it can be. But what do you do, if you have a job which is not your ideal? You don't know what is the ideal but all you know is, this isn't it. Life without purpose feels unfulfilled, empty and pointless. Since work is a big part of most of our lives, its natural that we identify our satisfaction and success with how we feel doing what we do. So naturally, when you aren't doing something that aligns with your passion and interest, its not going to feel right, no matter how successful you are. When life gives you lemons... you take the seeds and plant a lemon tree. (because you secretly want to farm) We must always work from the circle of our influence*, so even if you don't work your dream job, you must find ways to bring your purpose into your everyday activities. It is possible to meet the goals and metrics set out by your organization AND include little acts in your daily work that align with your passions.
It's one of my favorite things to coach on, working out different solutions using individual perspectives. Brainstorm with a friend and figure out, how best can you bring YOUR purpose to work. And when you find it, nothing beats the new found energy you have for your job. What is the one thing you can do differently? *Circle of Influence is a concept in 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
